Don’t Let Fear Of The Dentist Compromise Your Oral Health

sleep dental Alexandria

Fear is a powerful thing. If you have claustrophobia, you take a pass on cave exploration. If you have a fear of heights, you avoid sky diving. People with dentophobia fear dentists, and avoid dental care at all costs. At the Mt. Vernon Center for Dentistry in Alexandria, we can help such people do something about it.

The problem with dental phobia is that people coping with it are putting their dental health at risk. Many such people avoid the dentist entirely, while others only manage appointments when a condition has gotten so bad, they can’t take it anymore.

At that point, the treatment may be extreme, like an extraction that could have been prevented with earlier intervention or preventative measures.

If you are coping with dental phobia, sedation dentistry may be just the answer you need. At the Mt. Vernon Center for Dentistry we offer three types of sedation:

  • Nitrous oxide. Popularly called laughing gas, nitrous oxide puts you in a very relaxed state. It is safe and effective, works quickly, and wears off quickly. It’s been used in dentistry for more than one hundred years.
  • Oral conscious sedation involves taking a sedative before your scheduled appointment. It puts you in a deeply relaxed state.
  • IV sedation puts you in an even deeper state of relaxation. As the name indicates, it is administered intravenously. You will remain awake through your prcedure, and will even be able to answer questions we put to you. But you probably won’t remember any of it afterward.

With oral conscious sedation and IV sedation, you will need a ride to and from our office.

If you or a loved one are coping with dental phobia or anxiety, please schedule an appointment with us at the Mt. Vernon Center for Dentistry. With sedation dentistry you can get the dental care you deserve. We have a full range of family dentistry and other services.
