You Won’t Be Out Cold: Sedation Dentistry in Alexandria

Sedation Dentistry Alexandria

Does your heart start pounding at the mere thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you pass a dental practice? Sedation dentistry at the Mt. Vernon Center for Dentistry in Alexandria may be just what you need.

About fifteen percent of Americans have dental anxiety to one degree or another. They are able to make and keep dentist appointments because of sedation. Sedation dentistry is a safe and simple way for you to remain comfortable as you get your dental work.

At the Mt. Vernon Center for Dentistry, we offer nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation.

Nitrous Oxide
Known popularly as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the process, but wears off quickly afterward. If you need a little help to get through dental care, but don’t want to be knocked out cold, this may be the best option.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedatives don’t start working as swiftly as nitrous oxide, but they help most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. You take a medicaton called Triazolam about an hour before your appointment. It does not  bring about complete unconsciousness, but you’ll be indifferent to your surroundings. You’ll need a ride home when the procedure is finished.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery and results in true sleep dentistry. Most patients are unaware to what is occurring in their mouth. IV sedation is often used for root canals, wisdom teeth extractions, and multi-procedure smile makeovers. You’ll need a ride home after IV sedation, too.

Sedation dentistry is the answer for millions of Americans with dental anxiety. Call the Mt. Vernon Center for Dentistry in Alexandria to find out more, or to schedule an appointment. We also provide cosmetic dentistry.
